| Sumario: | This work is part of the first stage of the research project entitled Terminological Variation: A Contrastive Multilingual Study in the Legal and TechnicalScientific Fields, and Possibilities for ComputerBased Representation and Management conducted by GITEL (School of Languages). Its purpose is to characterize the genre Petition and provide a basis for the subsequent stages of the project: the inter- and intralinguistic contrast with other genres and the analysis of the degree of terminological variation in certain text types, as well as the correlation between said variation and the genre the text realizes. Legal genres («those generated in the creation, enforcement, spreading of, and research about Law» [Borja Albi, 2007, p. 141]) constitute, just like any other genres, «relatively stable types» (Bajtín, 1998, p. 245) that have been characterized from the different perspectives that impact upon their production and reception: the context in which they are circulated, the relationship with other genres from different repertoires, its structure aspects, its pragmatic sides, etc. The significance of a generic analysis is undeniable. As Bajtín (1998) puts it, «Speech genres organize our speech […] If speech genres did not exist and we had not mastered them […] speech communication would be almost impossible» (p. 265). Furthermore, we acknowledge their pedagogical importance, since we agree with Alexopoulou (2011), who explains that familiarizing students with genres will enrich their education because it will allow them not only to understand texts but to produce them respecting their conventions and «knowing what to say to whom and how to say it properly in a particular situation» (p. 105). Given the complexity intrinsic to genre analysis, in this work we will start from the classification of legal texts proposed by Borja Albi (2000) and then apply the analysis model proposed by Ciapuscio and Kuguel (2002), which studies four «levels» (functions, situation, semantic content and form), in order to provide an initial description of the genre in focus. |
