The Italian prefix ri- is attached to verbal bases to which it provides different values. From a contrastive and traductological perspective, the present research addresses the study of the Italian aspectual prefix ri- and its Spanish equivalent re-. Specifically, the study focuses on the value of repetition that the prefix in question adds to the verbal base (Iacobini, 2004; Baroni, n.d.; Varela & Martín García, 1999). The paper aims to describe and to contrast the particularities of the Italian aspectual prefix and those of its equivalent in Spanish, at the level of interaction between system and discourse. Then, based on the contrastive analysis carried out, the aim of this study is to detect translation problems and to propose solutions to these problems. The corpus under analysis consists of original texts in Italian and in Spanish, some of them with their respective Spanish or Italian translation. The results show that the context of use is a factor that influences the aspectual interpretation of the prefix ri-; besides, the results demonstrate that the different productivity of the prefixes which are contrasted and the ambiguity of some verbs prefixed with ri- may lead to translation problems.
