Sumario:Currently, mental health problems are one of the main causes of suffering in the perinatal period. Objective: to carry out a narrative review of the publications related to perinatal mental health and nursing participation in its care. Methodology: a non-exhaustive search was carried out in the PubMed, ScienceDirect, SCIELO, and Lilacs (VHL) databases. Results: 80 articles were selected, of which 37 correspond to systematic reviews or meta-analyses, 34 quantitative investigations and 9 qualitative investigations. Three gray literature publications were also taken as reference. The results were classified into: social determinants of health, epidemiology of perinatal mental health problems, couples’ mental health, barriers to care, and the importance of nursing participation. Conclusion: Nursing is in a key position to significantly improve the psychological well-being of pregnant and postpartum women, and their families, and reduce barriers in care to reduce the treatment gap.
