| Sumario: | Pregnancy induces physiological changes that require special supervision and care. Along this stage, infections can be risky for both the pregnant woman and the developing embryo/fetus. In recent years, extensive documentation has been published linking periodontal disease with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as low birth weight and premature births, both conditions involved in neurodevelopmental difficulties. There is evidence that indicates that pathogenic microorganisms in the oral cavity are necessary for periodontal disease but not sufficient per se, reason why pregnant women require particular attention regarding their genetics and environment. |
