However, social scientists and researchers still use images as illustrations to their texts, which they generally build upon other primary sources. Because of this, we do not have specific methodologies and systematic strategies to analyze and decode photographic images, considering both their material and symbolic aspects. In addition, research on the damages due to the passage of time and inconvenient storage conditions is still scarce. This paper offers theoretical and methodological perspective on the possibility of building historical knowledge upon photographic documents, based on evidence from an ongoing project on the preservation and revalorization of the photographic heritage in Uruguay. Desde su invención en la década de 1830 del siglo XIX hasta la actualidad, la fotografía ha extendido su campo de acción de manera constante y creciente. Sin embargo, desde las ciencias sociales y las humanidades, por lo general, las imágenes continúan utilizándose a modo de ilustración para complementar trabajos ya escritos o acompañar temas y problemas abordados a partir de otras fuentes. Por otra parte, su escasa consideración como documento ha retrasado el establecimiento de metodologías propias del análisis documental para decodificar y sistematizar sus soportes y contenidos y no ha promovido la investigación acerca de sus partes constitutivas y sus consiguientes deterioros a raíz del paso del tiempo y de las variadas condiciones de conservación. En este artículo se realizan algunas reflexiones teórico-metodológicas sobre la posibilidad de construir conocimiento histórico a partir de fotografías y se comparte una experiencia de trabajo en curso sobre revalorización y preservación del patrimonio fotográfico en Uruguay.
