Sumario:In this article I address the new historiographical perspectives related to the study of the nineteenth century press, with a particular emphasis on the catholic journalism of that time. On that basis, I uphold the pertinence of making use of such publications to construct an intellectual history of Argentinian Catholicism in the latter half of the nineteenth century. I afterwards focus on a case study –the reception of John William Draper’s History of the Conflict between Religion and Science by the catholic newspaper La América del Sud– to ponder the possibilities an intellectual history approach may open for its analysis.
