Sumario:The Society of Jesus introduced aunique cultural-social system inCórdoba that greatly influenced theprovince. The Jesuits contributedsignificantly to science, technology, arts and engineering, creatinghydraulics systems for irrigationand waterpower. In the Jesuit Estancias(Caroya, Alta Gracia, SantaCatalina and La Candelaria), theybuilt dams called “Tajamares”, beingthe oldest artificial reservoirs inthe Province of Córdoba. Althoughsome of them are in operation, others have changed their purposeor are inactive, but are still standing. These dams need studies toevaluate their condition and guaranteetheir operation. The Jesuitsdesigned these works to integratethem into the environment withminimal impacts, perhaps due to a utopian vision of applying theprinciple of harmony in all aspectsand practical reasons related to theconstruction of hydraulics works. This is the starting point for planningmeasures for their preservation, recovery, and conservation, inaccordance with UNESCO’s recommendationto protect hydraulicsystems in heritage areas. With thisobjective in mind, the group carriedout hydrological, bathymetric, topographicand stability studies in theTajamares of four Jesuit estancias inorder to understand their functioningand propose measures for theirprotection and conservation fromhydraulic, structural and patrimonialaspects.
