| Sumario: | This paper discusses different modalities of settlement foundation using an historical and archaeological approach to the case of Valdivia city (Lat. S. 40 °) and its ceramic record. For this purpose, we present other cases of colonial Chile, where it has established the overlapping of hispanic urban centres to indigenous installations or settlements. We discuss the crucial factors that influence or determine the location ofcolonies/cities over previously occupied areas. The paper points out that read or describe the archaeological and historical data involves permanent evaluation of “translatability” between material patterns and textual evidence, that allows a comprehensive reading of intercultural relations that critique the classic dichotomic model based on a monodisciplinary approach. |
