Sumario:In the construction of ornamental pieces and objects belonging to historical and archaeological heritage have been used copper and its alloys for their ability to form protective film against corrosion under oxidizing atmospheric conditions. The films may be the result of natural or artificial attack on the metal substrate and sometimes are produced as effectively or surface finish to achieve artificial aging in new parts of artistic value. Under certain environmental factors (temperature, humidity, atmospheric pollutants, natural, anthropogenic, rain, sunlight), they may form other compounds originate the so-called “green patina” which is aesthetically pleasing, and generally consisting of sulphates, nitrates, carbonates, chlorides , etc. Due to the importance of the importance of these protective films different production techniques of artificial and natural films are analyzed in conjunction with cleaning methods on the surface of different pieces of cultural heritage. Finally, it states that it is for ornamental metal parts and objects of historical/archaeological important to avoid as far as possible intervention procedures, which leads to the concept of preventive conservation, ensuring the integrity of the piece from the point of view physical, historical and archaeologically.
