Sumario:In this paper, we discuss the issue of aboriginal demography in the southern Argentine frontier during the period 1877-1879, from a historical-archaeological perspective. Our aim is to present some hypotheses on the mentioned theme, based on the information compiled in written documents. For that purpose, we intend to: 1) establish the social – historical framework of theevents and the role of the army in the Argentine state; 2) describe the military mobility strategy; 3) establish the size and distribution of the aboriginal population towards the end of the 19th century in the actual province of La Pampa; 4) analyze the army’s strategy and tactics, as a determining factor resulting in written data; 5) map the obtained information, using demographic clusters as indicators in order to propose a predictive model about the location of the archaeological sitesin the region for the years 1877, 1878 and 1879.
