| Sumario: | The long term Holocene maintenance of a subsistence system based on Lama guanicoe hunting is preliminary evaluated in this paper. Due to the biogeographical isolation condition of camelids in the Sierras of Córdoba, a high vulnerability to human predation is expected. As a consequence, subsistence strategies based on this prey would not be maintainable beyond the Middle Holocene (6000-3000 BP). In order to test this hypothesis, taxonomic abundance and richness, age class composition and processing marks in two faunal assemblages from the upper Córdoba mountain grassland range were analyzed: Arroyo El Gaucho 1 (Pampa de Achala), chronologically corresponding to Early to late Middle Holocene, and Puesto La Esquina 1 (Pampa de Olaen), dated to the second half of the Late Holocene. The results show a significant decrease in camelid relative abundance since the Middle Holocene, as well as an increase in taxonomic richness and processing intensity. It is assumed that L. guanicoe suffered demographic fluctuations which were likely related to the colonization of the Sierras of Córdoba by hunter-gatherers. |
