description |
In the first novel published by the Catalan writer Carmen Laforet, Nada, from 1944, the city of Barcelona transcends the function of a mere stage for action and becomes an indispensable condition for the protagonist, Andrea, to discover and reinvent her role within the society. Andrea's urban experience will be an initiatory journey that confronts her against two apparently contradictory images of Barcelona: an idyllic-Apollonian Barcelona and a grotesque-Dionysian Barcelona. Parallel to her growth as a woman, Andrea will accept the role of flâneuse for herself, and from there she will discover a third face of Barcelona, the modern city, which will show her to what extent the other two can be complementary. In her search, Andrea discovers that her place cannot agree with the routes that the tradition and conservatism of post-war Spain allow a woman to follow, or limit itself to the spaces that would appear in a Barcelona scheme designed for tourists. Andrea can only find herself in the intimate, autobiographical city, which she will discover for herself as a flâneuse, free from imposed imaginaries. |
