El Bumbún (2009), film written and directed by Fernando Bermúdez, is considered as the first fiction feature film entirely made in the province of La Rioja in Argentina. In it, the desolate and wild landscape entwingles with the story of Bumbún, a girl raised as a boy to satisfy the paternal and social demand. The plot revolves around the prohibition of femininity against a dictatorial and aggressive backdrop. Gender violence, censored desire and the idea of “small town, big hell” charge the story with an increasing tension towards a tragic and hopeless end.
In this article, we intend to realize a reading of the film El Bumbún in order to establish a dialogue between gender theories, the characteristics of La Rioja as a region and the socio-historical context in which the story develops. Likewise, we will review some key elements implied in the story, such as childhood, gazes and words.
