First evidence of Bnyamwera orthobunyavirus circulation in Formosa province, Argentina

Bunyamwera orthobunyavirus (BUNV) virus is an arbovirus kept in nature in a cycle that mainly involves mosquitoes and vertebrates. In America, this virus is important because of its potential pathogenicity for both human and domestic animals. In Argentina, Aedes (Ochlerotatus) albifasciatus (Córdoba...

description Bunyamwera orthobunyavirus (BUNV) virus is an arbovirus kept in nature in a cycle that mainly involves mosquitoes and vertebrates. In America, this virus is important because of its potential pathogenicity for both human and domestic animals. In Argentina, Aedes (Ochlerotatus) albifasciatus (Córdoba) and Psorospora (Grabhamia) varinervis (Santa Fe) mosquito strains have been recovered; and from horses with neurological syndrome and an equine abortion (Santa Fe). Between 2008-2009 and 2013-2014, mosquitoes of other species infected by BUNV were detected in the Center and Northeast of the province of Córdoba, their involvement in public health being unknown. In Córdoba, the presence of neutralizing antibodies in humans was demonstrated, and a clinical case was confirmed by BUNV with febrile syndrome reported as Dengue during the outbreak that produced this virus in 2009. The objective of this work was to know the presence / absence of BUNV in mosquitoes in the town of San Francisco Laishí in Formosa province during the autumn of 2017. We analyzed 21 pools, each consisting of 50 individuals per species of mosquitoes, previously identified and collected in a field in the San Francisco Laishí. BUNV was detected by generic RT-PCR for orthobunyavirus that amplifies a region of 251 (base pairs) of genomic segment S and subsequent sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. Of the total pools analyzed, 6 were obtained with a positive result. The positive pools corresponded to the species Culex (Melanoconion) educator (2), Cx (Mel) bastagarius, Cx (Mel) intrincatus, Ae (Och) Sp, Cx (cux) acharistus. Five samples were sequenced, which were grouped together with those previously determined in the same clade. These preliminary results, experienced a contribution to knowledge about the circulation of the Orthobunyavirus genus in Argentina and encourage us to continue research regarding the role of BUNV as a human and / or domestic animal pathogen and its maintenance cycle.
