Significant issues considering that the aesthetic-cultural proposals of the author become the germinal point of many identity-construction operations developed in literary discourse in the last two decades. Fundada en el concepto de imaginación histórica, la relectura lezamiana del arte colonial en el siglo XX en los ensayos de La expresión americana, publicados en 1957, constituye un gesto de resistencia a la dominación cultural desde el ámbito de la interpretación artística que, además, proporciona las escenas del drama americano en el origen de su cultura.En función de estos ensayos de Lezama Lima, este trabajo se propone poner en evidencia el rol histórico atribuido al modo de expresión barroca y la construcción de la figura genuina del artista, factores en base a los cuales el cubano funda una identidad americana legítima. Cuestiones significativas si consideramos que las propuestas estético-culturales del autor, resultan el punto germinal de varias operaciones identitarias desarrolladas en el discurso literario en las dos últimas décadas.
