In it, the desolate and wild landscape entwingles with the story of Bumbún, a girl raised as a boy to satisfy the paternal and social demand. The plot revolves around the prohibition of femininity against a dictatorial and aggressive backdrop. Gender violence, censored desire and the idea of “small town, big hell” charge the story with an increasing tension towards a tragic and hopeless end. In this article, we intend to realize a reading of the film El Bumbún in order to establish a dialogue between gender theories, the characteristics of La Rioja as a region and the socio-historical context in which the story develops. Likewise, we will review some key elements implied in the story, such as childhood, gazes and words. __ ARK: http://id.caicyt.gov.ar/ark:/s22504524/m705zo8rq El Bumbún (2009), filme escrito y dirigido por Fernando Bermúdez, es considerado el primer largometraje de ficción íntegramente realizado en la provincia de La Rioja. En él, el paisaje desolado y agreste se mezcla con la historia de Bumbún, una niña criada como varón para satisfacer la demanda paterna y social. La trama gira en torno a esa prohibición de la femineidad con un telón de fondo dictatorial y agresivo. La violencia de género, el deseo censurado y la idea de “pueblo chico, infierno grande” cargan al relato de una tensión in crescendo hacia un final trágico y desesperanzador. En este artículo, nos proponemos realizar una lectura de la película El Bumbún buscando establecer un diálogo entre las teorías de género, las características de lo regional riojano y el contexto sociohistórico en el que se desarrolla la trama.
