In it, the desolate and wild landscape entwingles with the story of Bumbún, a girl raised as a boy to satisfy the paternal and social demand. The plot revolves around the prohibition of femininity against a dictatorial and aggressive backdrop. Gender violence, censored desire and the idea of “small town, big hell” charge the story with an increasing tension towards a tragic and hopeless end. In this article, we intend to realize a reading of the film El Bumbún in order to establish a dialogue between gender theories, the characteristics of La Rioja as a region and the socio-historical context in which the story develops.
