A noticeable phenomenon within those processes was the expansion of the labour market and, in particular, of the administrative jobs. Among the latter, secretaries increased their professionalization, which derived from both their access to the educational system and the progressive feminisation of administrative tasks. In this work, firstly, I will show the rise in the number of women occupied in the private bureaucratic sector. Secondly, I will address the feminisation of the secretarial profession. The analysis, which draws on Women’s History and Gender Studies, will proceed through a critical analysis of population censuses, training manuals for the commercial area and commercial press.   Este artículo se propone analizar la construcción de la identidad laboral de la ocupación de secretaria en Buenos Aires y Santiago de Chile, dos sociedades que vivieron similares procesos de modernización capitalista, en la primera mitad del siglo XX. Uno de los fenómenos sobresalientes de esos procesos fue la expansión de los mercados de trabajo y, dentro de ellos, de las ocupaciones administrativas. Dentro de éstas, la secretaria se constituyó en una ocupación que vivió tanto un proceso de profesionalización a partir del pasaje por el sistema educativo, como un proceso de feminización que estimuló la presencia de mujeres. De acuerdo con lo anterior, en primer lugar, se demostrará el ingreso e incremento de las mujeres en el sector burocrático privado; en segundo lugar, se caracterizará el proceso profesionalización y, finalmente, se abordará el proceso de feminización de la ocupación. El análisis se desarrollará a partir de un análisis crítico de censos de población, manuales de capacitación comercial y prensa comercial que se realizará desde la Historia de las Mujeres y los estudios de género.   Facultad de Filosofía y Humanidades.
