This articledevelops this idea by laying out three forms of consensus, or sets of ideas and policies, that have successively struggled for prevalence in the various eras that the region has gone through - with an uncertain outcome in the case of the latest one. The major contradiction, today as in the past, is that between an autonomous integration project and a deeply dependent integration project. En sus 25 años de historia, el MERCOSUR ha sido la expresión de una geografía económica, política, cultural y jurídico-institucional en la cual han buscado plasmarse los diversos proyectos que disputan su hegemonía en América del Sur. El artículo desarrolla esta idea a través de la presentación de tres “consensos” o conjuntos de ideas y políticas, que han buscado imponerse en la región en cada una de sus diversas etapas, aún incierta la última de ellas. La contradicción principal, hoy como ayer, es la que tiene lugar entre un proyecto de integración autonómico y un proyecto de integración profundamente dependiente.
