Tres personajes, un monje, un leñador y un peregrino, hablan de la muerte de un samurái y de los testimonios acerca de este hecho presentados en la corte por los involucrados. Los distintos relatos del hecho muestran que todos mienten, que nadie es sincero. Rash?mon (1950) de Akira Kurosawa es una película que presenta un panorama sombrío de la naturaleza del hombre, quien sería esencialmente egoísta y deshonesto, y que pone en duda, sino la capacidad, al menos la voluntad humana por alcanzar verdad: “Quién es sincero hoy en día? Solo creemos serlo. (…) Preferimos olvidar lo que no nos gusta. El hombre al final termina creyendo sus propias mentiras. Es más fácil”, opina el peregrino. En esta presentación crítica de Rash?mon, hablaré de la tensión entre la naturaleza reconstructiva de la memoria y la capacidad de acceder a las verdades del pasado, así como también de la naturaleza de la insinceridad. Mostraré que el aspecto epistemológico y el aspecto moral de nuestra relación con la verdad pasada están estrechamente ligados y que, en definitiva, requieren una comprensión del funcionamiento de la mente humana.
