Combining autoethnography, ethnography, and critical pedagogy, the researcher becomes a participant in the study, turning inward to examine the Self and the complexities of cultural perspectives through the lens of critical pedagogy. Intense reflexivity and introspection undergird this study of Self as participant, going beyond recounting facts as objectively as possible, as occurs with autobiography, to acknowledging that the researcher is interpreting the facts through cultural perspectives formed through years of sociocultural, socio-historical, sociopolitical, and socioeconomic events and circumstances. Subsequently, the researcher, more than likely a member of the dominant culture in some categories is able to understand herself as an oppressor.  Este ensayo presenta la autoetnografía crítica como una estrategia innovadora para desarrollar investigaciones en comunidades marginadas y vulnerables. Como se usa en este artículo, es una combinación de autoetnografía, etnografía y pedagogía crítica por la cual la investigadora se hace participante en el estudio, dirigiéndose al interior para examinar el Self y la complejidad de las perspectivas usando la lente de la pedagogía crítica. La reflexividad y la introspección intensas apoyan este estudio del Self como participante para ir más allá del recuento de hechos tan objetivamente como sea posible, que es lo que ocurre con la autobiografía, para reconocer que la investigadora interpreta los hechos de su vida a partir de perspectivas culturales que se han formado por años debido a sucesos y circunstancias socioculturales, socio-históricas, sociopolíticas y socioeconómicas que le han ocurrido. Subsecuentemente, la investigadora, como miembro de la cultura dominante, en algunas categorías puede verse y entenderse a sí misma como opresora de la gente que vive en las comunidades donde hace sus investigaciones.
