The response to radiant heat and the estimation of the temperature of distant sources in Triatoma infestans

The response of blood-sucking bugs (Triatoma infestans) to thermal stimulation, in the absence of warm-air gradients or convection currents, was analysed, using windows with different infrared transmittance. When some infrared radiation could reach the insects, they responded as without window. When...

520 3 |a The response of blood-sucking bugs (Triatoma infestans) to thermal stimulation, in the absence of warm-air gradients or convection currents, was analysed, using windows with different infrared transmittance. When some infrared radiation could reach the insects, they responded as without window. When infrared-opaque windows were used, no response was evoked. Discrimination of the source temperatures was tested using two sources at different temperatures and open-loop conditions. The bugs orientated toward that source that had the temperature of a food source and preferred it to a source at 50°C, in spite of both sources being 10 cm distant. From behavioural evidence we conclude that T. infestans perceives the radiant heat of a warm source and can estimate its temperature at a distance, when seeking for food. © 1989.  |l eng
