Nota de contenido:
...It covers the description and analysis of geological structures in the Earth's crust; guides students through the principles of stress, strain, and rheology; and describes mechanisms contributing to rock deformation. It also links the process and style of deformation to tectonic settings, in the context of plate tectonics theory. The authors make the subject accesible to students by using a conversational writing style full of familiar analogies (from smashed cars to stretched rubber bands) and by providing conceptual images, not just mathematical formulas. Van der Pluijm and Marshak have updated the entire text and improved the art through-out. In addition, the second edition includes a new chapter, "Geophysical imaging". As before, Earth structure closes with essays on the structure of individual regions, with four essays added for the second edition (covering the alps, the altaids, the appalachians, and the cascades). These regional essays, which are effectively case studies that allow students to apply the knowledge that they have gained from the earlier parts of the book, were contributed by leading researchers from around the world.
